The New Room Sunday School Class

April 23 @ 9:30 am
|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 9:30am on Sunday, repeating indefinitely

 9:30 – 10:30 AM, Room 217A

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. (NRSV, Ps 23:1)

Even if I’m surrounded by shadows of Death, I fear no danger, for you are with me. (Inclusive, Ps 23:4)

Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever. (NLT, Ps 23:6)

The verses of the twenty-third psalm are some of the most recognizable, memorized, and loved in the Old Testament. Why? Rabbi Harold Kushner describes them as fifteen lines from a single page of the Bible that can change your life. He writes, “Listen closely to them, read them with an open mind and an open heart, and you will find the answers to questions you are asking, questions about yourself, the people around you, and the world in which you and they live.”

Join us in the season of Lent, starting February 26, as we read and talk about Harold Kushner’s, “The lord Is My Shepherd:  Healing Wisdom of the 23rd Psalm”. Along the way, we’ll look at how sermons, commentaries, and different translations enrich our understanding of the Bible.

Need a copy of the book? Catch Kevin Geurts or Angela Smith at 1st Service in the chapel, or catch Randy Scott at 2nd Service in the sanctuary. Or get an eBook or hard copy from Amazon.

Who we are

Screen Shot 2016-02-23 at 12.12.36 AMThis class is for adults of any age. We most often focus our discussion around books, and sometimes watch video lectures. Our reading, watching, and talk is on themes of Christian behavior and growth, Wesleyan ideals, God’s radical love and inclusiveness, and of course, the Bible. We see ourselves as a learning and support community, sharing the road on our Christian journeys.

We chose our name, New Room, to remember our roots and to look with hope to the future

The New Room, in Bristol, England, is the oldest Methodist chapel in the world. Built by John Wesley in 1739, as a place of meetings and worship, it also served the poor as a dispensary and schoolroom. Our name reminds us to strive to reflect Wesley’s method of building communities of faith through small groups.

Our name also reminds us to work towards a new and fully reconciled Methodist Church, that opens its doors wide and makes room for all God’s children, in full inclusion.

Visitors are welcome any time. Come join us. We are quite informal. Don’t worry if we are in the middle of a book. It’s okay to just listen, until you get familiar with our current topic.

If you want to find out more about our class, come join us for a week. Or catch Kevin Geurts or Angela Smith at 1st Service in the chapel, or catch Randy Scott at 2nd Service in the sanctuary.
