About

BSN Provides nurturing care and support for individuals who are infected with or affected by HIV / AIDS, as well as those who are Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Questioning and their families and friends.

History

The Bering Support Network (BSN) was begun in 1986 with what is now one of the longest-running HIV/AIDS support groups in the country: the Bering Spiritual Support Group (BSSG).

Today, weekly attendance at BSSG is around 55-60. Over these twenty-five years, BSN has served more than 4,400 persons through this program.

Over the years, BSN’s focus has expanded beyond those infected by HIV/AIDS to include gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and questioning persons and their friends and families. Because these communities are the primary recipients of our services, we have tailored our programs to address their unique needs.

During our twenty-five years of service, BSN has provided a variety of support groups for our community, such as PROTECT–a group in the early 90’s designed to support HIV-negative persons in their efforts to remain uninfected. We have also provided support groups for other chronic diseases such MS, brain atrophy, chronic depression, Hepatitis C, and Muscular Dystrophy.

Although counseling is not part of our current offerings, an integral part of BSN’s legacy is the quality, affordable, and confidential counseling we were able to provide to many clients—counseling which gave vital assistance to those experiencing difficult times. Because we realize the value of counseling as part of achieving physical, mental, and spiritual health, we continue to keep an up-to-date listing of counseling providers for referral.

Twenty-Fifth Anniversary

As we observe our 25th Anniversary, the BSN Board is committed to not only reflecting upon where we have been, but also taking stock of where we are today and where we need to be in the future to meet the changing needs of our community.
